“This piece was written for Sir James Galway. Familiarity with his flute-timbre, technical prowess, and insouciant temperament influenced the mood of the work, which is by turns tender, fun-loving, wistful and ebullient, a happy change for the composer, still travailed on occasion by the memory of the, at times, apocalyptic mode in which the ‘Music for Violoncello and Orchestra’ was written.

I began composing ‘Music for Flute and Orchestra’ in January of 1995 and completed it on August 14. It was given its world premiere on October 12, 1995, with Sir James as soloist and the Pittsburgh Symphony under my direction.
